With so many game design classes happening already this year, First Coding decided to practice the concepts taught in these workshops and entered last month’s Global Game Jam. This is a world-wide event where game designers have a weekend to build and present a game based on a theme. The theme of Roots was announced on Friday evening UK time and by Sunday First Coding had a game completed and ready to present. The game that was made was titled Rooots and is based on the popular game of Snake but with tree roots instead of snakes. It was made in Scratch and you can play it by clicking here.

As there were only a limited number of venues hosting the event, it meant travelling to Cardiff to submit and present. It was great to meet up with other developers and it served as a good reminder of just how kind and creative the game dev community really is.

Here are the final stats for the Global Game Jam event this year…
